The inviting window of the literary café Chez L’Éditeur encourages passersby to stop in. Its bright, modern interior and shelves laden with books – available for customers to read on site – make it a unique spot to linger.
Chez L’Éditeur allows and even encourages customers to browse new releases and best-sellers from Québec Amérique and Cardinal who share office space in the back. The café hosts a variety of activities such as writing workshops, author readings and podcast recording space.
Alexandra Valiquette, café manager and an integral part of the project recalls that when looking for new office space, Caroline Fortin, Executive Director of Québec Amérique, was inspired by Parisian publishing houses and New York cafés. Their goal of combining office space with a bookstore and café has been very successful. Since its opening in February, the café has attracted a steady clientele of regulars, book-lovers, and fans wanting to catch a glimpse of their favourite author.
“It’s a space where two worlds meet. We want to demystify the world of publishing, often seen as inaccessible. This is what sets us apart from other cafés. The family atmosphere ensures that everyone receives a warm welcome,” explains Ms Valiquette.
A coffee counter serving light snacks, a reception area for Québec Amérique and Cardinal, and a large glassed-in conference room opening onto the café complete the space.
“Our employees quickly adapted to the new concept and easily mingle with customers at lunch or during events,” added Ms Valiquette.
Staff is working to set up a regular program of events that will no doubt appeal to café customers and bibliophiles alike.
